Composer James Horner
teams up with director James Cameron again, now for
the soundtrack of the blockbuster "Avatar." Back in 1997,
Horner worked with Cameron on "Titanic", for whose
music he received many awards, especially for its main theme, 'My Heart Will Go On',
sung by Celine Dion.
Of his work for "Avatar," Horner says that he has never
toiled on such a complex soundtrack before. His approach has
been to mix the sound of
indigenous
instruments from several countries with a few invented by himself.
He has also composed the film's main theme 'I See You,' sung with passion by British diva
Leona Lewis (audible in the nuances of her voice), who has one of
the most beautiful and crystalline voices that have appeared in the
British pop scene in the last few years.
Unfortunately, 'I See You' follows in the same musical steps as 'My Heart Will Go On,'
to the point that the first two notes of the chorus of both songs
are the same (feature the same interval). This lessens the freshness of the song,
which could have opted for a more original approach taking advantage
of the innovation that characterizes the film elsewhere as well
as its exotic location (not necessarily the ethnic-flavored New
Age retread that characterizes the film's score).
We can only offer a few educated guesses as to why such a
conservative decision was made: the desire not to
deviate much from the formula that had brought success before;
the fact that the producers of 'I See You' are the same ones
behind 'My Heart Will Go On' (James Horner and Simon Franglen);
that James
Cameron wanted it that way or, simply, lack of new ideas.
In any case, the video itself is worth watching, even if only to
enjoy Lewis' beautiful voice while taking in the lush CGI
images of the film, which, ultimately, are its main attraction and
value. |
