behind Vidal Sassoon range is that they are state-of-the-art products with the finest technology, but they have also been tested by hairdressers for the maximum performance.

Actually, one of the things that we do is to incorporate conditioning products into styling products to give a lot of definition to your texture – whatever that is. Perhaps that is something a little less conventional, so we encourage our clients and our models to try that out for themselves and experiment. It’s about having fun with products.

In what way are you addressing modern women's needs with the trends you propose for spring?

Initially, what we do is create a look we call the ‘look of the season’ and that is always a collaboration with the models, with the creative team... and the look kind of evolves from one season to the next.

We don’t say to everybody OK, you have to have this haircut or you have to have red hair, straight hair, or curly hair – whatever. It’s really about saying, this is the look of the season, but this is the way this look translates into your own personal style.

Obviously we have salons all over the world that are looking after a very broad spectrum of people: different age groups, cultures... So I think we are very sensitive to the needs of our clients. But that doesn’t mean to say that you can’t have some fun with a new look and, ultimately, it might take a little time for that look to actually become mainstream fashion – or whatever you want to call it - but it does happen, eventually.

In your experience, how long does a trend usually take to become mainstream?

It can take a couple of years from the very first time a look happens to it actually becoming a mainstream look.

Considering the trends we've been talking about and addressing first people with straight hair - long or short - what are your suggestions?

I would say that, at the moment, the most fashionable looks are short ones. There’s a lot of emphasis on fringes. We’ve got something very new we call disconnection or undercutting where the top sections of the hair are much longer and the ones underneath are shorter and that really gives a very fresh, new, and contemporary edge to the haircut.

Many of the new hairstyles and haircuts are often a reaction to what has been going on before. So I look at this season as a reaction to ‘girl power,' which is a
marketing thing anyway - the Spice Girls and all of that stuff.
