What is the main purpose of this new Association you designers have created?

To make Spanish fashion known: the enormous amount of creativity we Spaniards have, and also to stress that the industry and the designers must walk together, something that, until a short time ago, was not happening.

Given the point in which the process of globalization of the world economies is now, isn't this initiative starting a little late?

I think that one should never look back. I am interested in the future, and I believe it is the future to which one should look towards. We are basically a strong group which, through future incorporations, will become even stronger. Certainly the future of Spanish fashion is promising. This means important things such as the creation of more jobs, which is fundamental, as well as a source of economical richness for our country, alongside the cultural enrichment which it is already contributing.

Fashion education here in Spain is scarce. Doesn't this harm the Spanish fashion industry?

I do not like to compare myself with other countries, especially with 'nouveau riche' such as the United States, but they have Parson's School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Here, in Europe, we have the Academie D'Ambers, the SMOT and VERSOT schools, the School of Applied Arts in Paris. They all have been the source of true fashion geniuses because they have received a great education.

In this sense I would like for this Association to stress that our fashion and design schools need solid educational foundations in order to prepare our future stylists and designers. This, in the long run, will be for the good of Spanish fashion. Education is a fundamental aspect.

What presence does Antonio Pernas have now in New York, which is to say, in the United States?

Very little. Last year we opened a showroom there. The presence of Spanish fashion in the United States is very limited which makes it hard for anybody, by himself, to enter that market. We need to approach this in a consensual manner, as a global image of Spanish design, and to try to gain those markets as a country brand. And, in this sense, I believe that our work from within the Association will make a difference.
