Burgos (Spain) – The Spanish city of Burgos is presenting a retrospective exhibition in homage of Paco Rabanne featuring his work during more than 30 years. Titled "Paco Rabanne Trayectoria" (Paco Rabanne Trajectory) and coordinated by the local Textile Commerce Association, it is the first of its kind to be presented in the designer's native country. Although a Spanish natural (he was born in the city of San Sebastian in 1934), Paco Rabanne has developed practically all his career in France, to where his family escaped during the Spanish Civil War when he was just a child. There, he made a name for himself within Haute Couture. Today, he is considered one of the Twentieth Century's most innovative, revolutionary and influential designers. In a moment where high-tech materials are clearly in vogue, we must remember that Paco Rabanne was the inventor -some 40 years ago- of many of the key fabrics and textures of this century. "Paco Rabanne Trayectoria" delves into the multiple aspects of this creator's work, as designer, thinker, sculptor, architect, intellectual... and, even, as musical producer. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to admire an historic selection of his designs such as history's first plastic dress (1964), his sensuous metallic mesh dresses, his paper dress collection or the creations he proposes for the upcoming summer of 2002. Alongside them, original documents, sketches, patterns and photographs from his personal archives. This exhibition also serves as an insight into Paco Rabanne's particular vision of fashion, his evolution through the years, the special techniques used in his work and the basic principle behind all of his creations: experimentation with new materials (plastic, leather, metal, paper, etc.), their volumes, their ability to be shaped, as well as their movement and capability to provoke. "Paco Rabanne Trayectoria"
can be visited at the FEC exhibition hall in Burgos until January 13,
2002.
Note: On May 31st 2001, Spain's King Juan Carlos presented Paco Rabanne with the "Golden Medal of the Beaux Arts" in recognition for a lifetime dedicated to design. |
