New York (U.S.), January 8, 2001 - In a press release from Donna Karan International today, the company replies to all the queries regarding the status of the LVMH merger proposal they were presented with last December 18th.

In their note, DKI informs that a "special committee of the Company's board of directors... will review any credible proposal submitted to it, determine what actions are in the best interest of the Company's shareholders and act accordingly. To that end, the special committee will evaluate LVMH's proposal to enter into merger negotiations as well as any viable proposal for a combination with another company and the option of remaining an independent company."

This is the latest news regarding the merger proposal, which came hot on the heels of an announcement by LVMH Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton saying that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of Gabrielle Studio Inc. This Company, privately owned by Donna Karan and her husband, Stephan Weiss, is the licensor of the Donna Karan trademarks to Donna Karan International (DKI).

According to the original LVMH press release, the mentioned acquisition for $450 million of Gabrielle Studio would be subject to a reduction of up to $50 million if LVMH entered into a merger agreement to acquire DKI within one year and it were consummated. Top of page

Madrid (Spain) - Spanish designer Modesto Lomba was elected President of the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain in an assembly that took place in Madrid recently.

From his new post, which had been occupied by founding President, Jesús del Pozo, Lomba plans to continue the work started by the Association two years ago. In other words, the support and betterment of Spanish Fashion in all its aspects: production, promotion and sales.

In a telephone conversation with Fashionclick.com, the new President told us that "The Association is currently in an initial inertia. Our more immediate projects include reorganizing the calendars for the different Spanish Fashion Shows (Cibeles, Gaudí and FIMI) and seeking common goals for all of them."

Reminded of the objectives several of the founding members of the Association highlighted in an interview with our magazine that coincided with its presentation, we asked Mr. Lomba about the results it has obtained until now. "The most important ones might be the least visible," he replied, "but we have achieved a project for Spanish fashion and it's now on its way. Some of the designers would like to see immediate changes, but, as far as I'm concerned, I believe that the challenges should be tackled without a specific timeline in mind."

According to the new President, the organization's future plans include solving the present lack of technical preparation within Spanish fashion with the opening, by next school year, of a high-level School of Fashion, "inspired on New York's Parson's (School of Design) and London's Saint Martin's (The London College of Fashion), which will not be limited to fashion design, but will also include cosmetics, accessories, textiles, finishes..." The Spanish Ministry of Culture and companies such as Zara, Camper, Puig and Artetextil will back the project.

On the other hand, and as a part of a project centered on internationalizing this country's fashion, they are studying the possibility of organizing presentations featuring top Spanish designers in Paris. These would be supported by entities such as ICEX (Spain's Institute of Foreign Commerce), the current Government, Intertextil and FEDECON (the Spanish Federation of Apparel Industries).

This month of February will mark another change. The so-called 'dissident' designers (Jesús del Pozo, Devota & Lomba, Angel Schlesser y Roberto Verino), all of them members of the Association of Fashion Creators, will again present within the Cibeles Shows. To this respect Lomba said, "We now connect physically with Cibeles, but we were always connected to them in spirit," and added, "although not all of us will show within the IFEMA show grounds."

The Association, which was founded in December of 1998, is the first entity that unites in Spain such a large group of designers. Presently, its members are: Elio Berhanyer, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Javier Larráinzar, Modesto Lomba, Antonio Pernas, Jesús del Pozo, Angel Schlesser, Roberto Torretta and Roberto Verino. Bilbao (Spain) – This city's Guggenheim Museum will host the Giorgio Armani exhibition this spring. The traveling retrospective arrives in Spain directly from the uptown Guggenheim in New York.

The display is the largest exhibition dedicated until now to a contemporary designer. Visitors to the museum will be able to get acquainted with this Italian designer's artistic contribution and social and cultural influence during the last 25 years.

Some 400 designs from different seasons will be in display, including spectacular night gowns and feminine versions of the tuxedo, alongside the daywear that has made Mr. Armani so famous: his sensuous men's suits and his women's jackets with a masculine touch.

These garments will be presented alongside a selection of beaded and embroidered accessories inspired on fabrics from China, India and Polynesia. Armani's interest in Oriental cultures has always been present in his creations, as is highlighted by the minimalism of his lines, in which the exotic dress is paired down until achieving a sophisticated, yet always practical, simplicity.

Many of the designs in the exhibition are also inspired in the cool fabrics and the warm colors of the North African desert, and illustrate one of the main characteristics of the designer: his taste for a neutral palette of sand and grayish colors.

Giorgio Armani can be considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. He knew how to change the rules of fashion creating a new vision of modern wear. Removing superfluous ornament and translating sportswear into business and evening wear, he has developed a personal style that, without a doubt, defines the philosophy of contemporary wardrobe.

Original sketches, photographs and video presentations complete this exhibition that has been designed by sceneographer  and visual artist Robert Wilson. Through a theatric combination of light, sound and architectural elements, Wilson will transform the unique spaces of the Museum in which to experience Armani's creations.

"Giorgio Armani" will be open at the Guggenheim Bilbao from March 24th to September 2nd 2001. Top of page
