Setting
up the tone is Destiny's Child with Independent
Women Part I, the main theme from the movie, which is the
record's first track. With phrases such as "I depend on me," the trio
sings that earning their own livelihood makes them independent. The single,
which has already reached number one in the American charts, is rapidly climbing
up those of other countries.
The
rest of the soundtrack includes
songs from the 70s and 80s. Among our
favorites:
Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel by Tavares, a
'Philadelphia Sound' number which was a style very in vogue during the disco
decade; Spandau Ballet's classic ballad, True, that
serves as a love song of sorts; and Brandy
(You're A Fine Girl) by Looking Glass, with a "sung"
intro by MTV comedian and - more recently - Drew Barrymore's real life
husband, Tom Green, who recurs to his off-beat humor for the stint.
Amongst
the new songs, Charlie's Angels
2000, a contemporary version of the series' well-known instrumental
theme
performed by Apollo Four Forty. After a few bars that create a
certain expectation, it shoots out with a hammering
distorted guitar, leading to the melody we all know; this, to me, is the best
part of the track. And, now that I mention this track, I must point out that
it has a well-focused video that includes snippets from several of the movie's
action scenes, as well as other imagery, that underline the power and excitement
pretended by this version of the music.
Among
the other artists that contribute to the soundtrack,
Aerosmith, Fatboy Slim and
Deee-Lite. Yet, there are at least two songs that, although present in the film,
are not in this album, Smack My B**** Up by Prodigy,
which accompanies more than one action sequence, and Blink 182's
All
The Small Things which is heard at the end of the movie.
That
notwithstanding, the 15 songs that make up this CD are a clear reflection of the
movie's emotional spectrum: action, fun, lightheartedness and sexiness. The
Charlie's Angels soundtrack is an album
with sufficient musical variety to accompany any mood.
