| Charlie's
Angels
– Almost
20 years after its television debut, "Charlie's Angels" is
back, but this time on the big screen. The new adaptation of the famous 70s TV
show is an action-comedy that has elite private detective beauties
Natalie (Cameron Díaz), Dylan (Drew Barrymore) and Alex (Lucy Liu, from Ally
McBeal) in search for multimillionaire computer genius Eric Knox (Sam
Rockwell), who has been kidnapped.
To
solve the case, the girls will make extensive use of their feminine
charms and martial arts techniques (The Matrix-type cable-assisted effects
included), as well as heroic feats that surpass credibility for
thrill's sake.
Charlie
continues at the helm of the Townsend Detective Agency and, as always,
stays off-camera (well, almost). John Forsythe, who was Charlie's
voice in the original TV series, repeats again in the English version
of the movie. And
American comedian Bill Murray, adding a dose of humor through his
character’s tawdriness and affectedness, plays Bosley, Charlie’s
intermediary.
"Charlie's Angels",
the movie, arrives at cinemas everywhere after the series' 70s look -
Farraw Fawcett-type hair included - was picked up by the international
fashion trends in recent seasons.
Yet,
the wardrobe selected this time is - certain disguises notwithstanding - more
up-to-date and in keeping with the action scenes in it. In fact, in several
occasions it is clearly influenced by them. The actresses, purportedly,
thought some of their outfits would have looked cooler had they worn high
heels with them. But, this would have made it impossible for them to follow
with a fight scene or - even less so - climb, so they ended up desisting.
Probably
the best element of the movie is its action scenes. Capable of making the most
extreme James Bond action sequences seem quite humanly plausible; their sheer
emotional power makes them entertaining to watch. Next, the gags, of which
there is a good amount. The best of them are by Diaz and Barrymore, because
the character played by Liu, being the brainy of the bunch, is less inclined
to them.
In
general, "Charlie's Angels" should attract
curious nostalgic fans of the original series, as well as admirers of the
three starring actresses and lovers of action for action's sake. Just one note
though, don't go to the cinema expecting deep intrigue or intelligent
suspense; leave your brain at home and just have plain a good time watching
the adventures of these three versions of feminine beauty 2000.
The
movie opened in the US on the 3rd of November, where, in general, it
has received good reviews on its fun/fresh aspects. It will screen across Europe
from the last days of November on. (In Spain it is scheduled for
December 1). For opening
date in your city check your local listing.
