Milan (Italy) - Known for its lingerie and swimwear collections, Bologna-based La Perla, presented its proposals for spring/summer 2001 during this city's recent fashion week.

The undisputed star of the catwalk was the new brassiére-bretelle (braces-bra), a sexy and stunningly bold creation. A female version of men’s suspenders, the bra comprises two strips of lace that cover only the center of the bosom. Made from white and black Leavers lace, it is also present in their beachwear collection.

Within La Perla's new creations, the ‘Chain-kini, an exclusive bikini with a brassiére-bretelle bra, constructed entirely from gold chains. The new design is, according to a spokeswoman from the Italian firm, the new 'object of desire and the season’s true exclusivity,' and will only be made to order through La Perla boutiques. The price, still to be decided, will be around US$ 1,700.00 (4 million lire.) Top of page

Paris (France) - Italian firm Mandarina Duck opened a new and innovative flagship store mid-October on Paris' 219 Rue Saint Honoré.

The locale - 300sq/m and 2-level selling space -, in which fluid curvilinear-paths abound, has been conceived by the internationally-known German architect/designer firm, Droog Design, and is the first in France to feature both Mandarina Duck's men and women's apparel, as well as their design objects and leather goods.

The interior design elements include a spiraling escalator which, rotating slowly on its axis, connects the two floors, letting the visitor observe the space from different angles.

The new store is part of an international program under which other flagships have been opened in Bologna, Venice and Modena. Next in line will be Milan and, in autumn 2001, London.

Mandarina Duck is known for its original and modern accessories and, since 1997, for its sportswear collections designed in high-tech materials. To date, it has more than 100 stores worldwide including Spanish units in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Bilbao. Top of page

Barcelona (Spain) – Majorica has presented Atlántida and Glamour this season, two new collections of rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings and brooches in elegant color combinations. Behind their design, and for the first time, Corentin Quideau, director of Cartier for the last 15 years, who has recently joined the Spanish jewelry company as artistic director.

More than thirty pieces have been created for the Atlántida range, which features black pearls of great quality, combined with ruby red, green peridot, white, citrine yellow and aquamarine stones. Shapes are very feminine, softly geometric and art deco-inspired, and incorporate beautiful color changes that break the seriousness of the pearl and the sobriety of its shape.

Glamour, on the other hand, consists of classical-style pieces mounted on large sized pearls. This series recovers the most classic pearl creations, but now redesigned with in-fashion colors such as Champagne, Atlántida Black, Nouage Gray and Aubergine. The result is very elegant jewels that combine the chromatism of stones in white, amethyst, aquamarine, peridot, ruby, citrine and sapphire.

Majorica is the largest company in the Spanish jewelry sector by turnover. Top of page

Metropoly:     Loewe  >

Madrid (Spain) - In response to today's men and women demand for accessories that are more adaptable to all types of situations and lifestyles (work, travel, sports, leisure...,) Loewe has created Metropoly.

A new line of accessories, it is made of a combination of Furia nappa - a classic material used by the house for 27 years - and G-TEX canvas, an innovative textile developed exclusively for the firm, whose great resistance, durability and lightness makes it ideal for luggage items and handbags.

Metropoly handbags, targeted at modern urban women, include models with long and short handles, as well as backpacks.

Travel articles comprise trolleys, suitcases, 24-hour and sports bags. Accompanied by a wide range of small accessories such as wallets, purses, cosmetic bags, cellular phone case...

The color palette is discreet, yet elegant: black on black, white on black or light beige over blue.

Worth mention, the invisible stitching in both the straps and the handles - a technique greatly perfected by Loewe, which lends a cleaner finish to the different articles while making them more comfortable to carry. Elsewhere, the elements in ruthenium metal, such as buckles and zipper handles, which, although inspired in the 70s, have been updated with the spirit of today's sportswear.

Metropoly is now available worldwide. Top of page
