New York - World-renowned über model, Gisele Bündchen, recently signed a multimillion-dollar contract with North American lingerie firm, Victoria’s Secret. As a result, the Brazilian beauty will appear in several of their lingerie, beauty and hosiery campaigns for television and print, as well as in their point-of-sale materials.

According to rumors that circulated amongst the fashion crowd during New York Fashion Week, Gisele will receive a cool 20 million US dollars for the job.

Bündchen's appearances under the contract will begin next November with the cover of the Victoria's Secret "Christmas Dreams & Fantasies" catalog.

It is nice to see that Gisele, albeit being a young, rich and famous model, still maintains her naturalness and a down-to-earth personality. We had a chance of seeing this for ourselves recently in New York, where we shared a few moments with her. If only some of the other famous models also behaved like this... Top of page

Madrid - Swedish retail company, H&M (Hennes & Mauritz), has just opened two stores in the Spanish capital. The first, a 1000-sq./m space in the centric, and always crowded, Calle Preciados, will sell their women's collections as well as lingerie, cosmetics and accessories. The second one,  located in the heart of the posh Barrio de Salamanca, on Goya Street, will also carry men's fashion.

Given the positioning of the Swedish brand, its opening in Spain could, without a doubt, give way to serious local competition between them and big operation Zara in what is this chain's own natural turf. To this respect, Lex Keijser, H&M's director for Spain, told us, "H&M sells international fashion at affordable prices, thus it is normal that we decide to open stores in Spain as a part of our expansion".

The high costs associated with the opening of new stores in both Spain and the US, as well as slow sales of H&M's spring 2000 line in Europe, however, made for a 31% fall in the company’s profits during this year's third quarter, as was reported by Women's Wear Daily last September. Mr. Keijser alleged that last season's collections had been "too trendy" for the European market but, it was well received in the US, where sales have been beyond H&M's expectations.

The company, which Keijser described as "very agile", has been making adjustments in the form of cost cuts and corrections amongst its different lines with the intention of fixing the situation. Reportedly, things are looking better now that their fall 2000 collection is doing well.

H&M, which already has other stores in the Spanish cities of Zaragoza and Barcelona, will open another one - this time dedicated to young fashion - the 19th of October on Barcelona's Portaferrissa Street. As for the US, where the company already has 6, it plans to open a total of 75 within the next 3 years. Top of page

Madrid - A party was held here recently to officially launch American designer, Donna Karan's, DKNY women's fragrance in Spain.

The event, which took place in a photographer's studio, was to featured the presence of Spanish model, Esther Cañadas and husband, Dutch model Mark Vanderloo, who are the image of the scent. (They purportedly flew in from NY for the occasion.)

Among those present, people from the beauty and fashion business such as fashion designer, Modesto Lomba and jewelry designer Chus Burés; as well as a large contingent of the "in" crowd and some local personalities. Everybody waited as the hours went by without the "hosts" arriving. Finally, and more than two hours later than had been announced, the model couple made their entrance, surrounded by a cloud of photographers and, that was that.

DKNY the fragrance, claims to be a whiff of the New York spirit and is targeted at modern urban women (18 to 35 years old) with versatile lifestyles.

As homage to the city behind its inspiration, the fragrance's minimalist bottle was designed to evoke the Big Apple's skyscrapers. DKNY for women, which has been launched in Spain just in time for the Christmas campaign, is priced here at 6.900. - Ptas.

In the US, where the women's fragrance has been on the market for some time, DKNY has recently launched its men's version. Top of page
