Within the multi-racial roster of models in the fashion business today, there is one who is quietly but surely leaving her mark, olive/cinnamon-skinned Teresa Lourenço.

Born in the island of Trinidad, this Caribbean beauty is one of those faces you surely must have run into more than once while browsing your favorite fashion or beauty magazine. Teresa has appeared,

among others, in publications such as Women’s Wear Daily, Elle, Vogue, and, of course, Fashionclick. She has also done advertising for the likes of  Yves Saint-Laurent Eyewear.

We met her at the Madrid spring 2000 shows where she agreed to let us follow her to New York for Fashion Week. There, we shared a little of her hectic life on and off the runway.

Things are quite laid-back at the Cibeles shows, definitely much more so than in NY and elsewhere. We take advantage of a moment backstage when

Teresa’s hair is being done for the next show to start
our snapshot of her.

What is your attitude towards dressing? What do you like to wear?

It depends. I don’t have any favorite designers. I just pick whatever I like. If I see something I like I get it. It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s a cheap outfit or if it’s a brand name.

What type of clothes are you into now?

I’m into hip skirts, really long ones, with lots of colors and flowers.

Any specific color?

Purple, red, black...

What was the longest photo shoot you’ve been in?

The longest one was in Berlin with Arthur Elgort; it was an almost 24 hour one. We started at 6 o’clock in the morning and finished at 2am the next day. It was with two other girls, for German Vogue for a 16-page editorial.

And the shortest?

Maybe an hour, but I can’t remember for what.

From the seven days in the week, how many do you usually have free?

On average maybe two, but sometimes when I have a lot of work I don’t even have one day free.

How many times a day does your cell phone ring?

When I’m in New York, oh gosh! Maybe 20 or 25 times a day. And when I’m traveling I get tons of messages.

What type of social activities do you usually do when you are back home in New York?

I have friends come over and we rent movies and order food; stay home and relax.

Do you ever go out at night?

I do so once in a while. It depends whether I’m tired or if I feel in the mood. If so, I go to movies or dinner, but not to parties or clubs. I’m not a party person.

Would you consider yourself a movie buff?

When I have the time I go to lots of movies. I haven’t been going to that many lately, though.

Among the films you have seen most recently, which did you enjoy the most?

I went to see "The Sixth Sense" when it opened and liked it. More recently... I loved "American Beauty."

Do you practice sports?

I go swimming when I’m at home.

Do you buy music?

Yes, reggae, soul, hip-hop.
